Railways to make Aadhar mandatory for booking of all tickets
13 Sep 2016
The Railways is planning to make Aadhar number mandatory for all bookings – both reserved and current tickets – as the Aadhar details will have to be entered in the train ticket while booking.
Media reports say the railway ministry had long contemplated linking of train tickets with Aadhar card. A final policy in this regard will be approved within this fortnight, the reports further said.
It would be compulsory to furnish Aadhar Card details for both reserved and unreserved ticket booking for both online as well as counter reservation.
The move is aimed at tackling the menace of touts who block tickets in advance under fictitious names and passengers often do not get tickets in advance as bulk tickets are being cornered by touts.
Besides, Aadhar-based ticket booking will enable direct fund transfer to those who seek concession under various quotas such as senior citizens, freedom fighters, differently-abled, students and unemployed youths.
As of now, 1.05 billion Aadhar numbers have been generated by UIDAI, which is entrusted with the responsibility of conducting enrolments in all states and Union Territories, except Assam and Meghalaya.
At present over 6 lakh Aadhaar enrolments are being done on a daily basis while over 6 million Aadhaar Authentication Transactions happen every day. Over 2.41 billion Aadhaar Authentication Transactions have been logged since inception.
