Rinfra’s new substation in Mumbai suburb saves 90 per cent space

Reliance Infrastructure today has set up an extra high voltage substation in Borivali, a Mumbai suburb, to strengthen the Mumbai transmission grid, which, the company said, is already congested due to the consistent growth in demand over last few years.
Reliance Infrastructure Limited (RInfra), which is the power transmission and distribution licensee for Mumbai, said the multi-storied, compact 220kV extra high voltage (EHV) sub-station at Borivali saves 90 per cent of the space compared to the conventional one.
"As a result, Mumbai suburban consumers will experience enhanced quality and reliable power supply from their power distribution utilities," Reliance Infrastructure said in a statement.
The commissioning of this extra high voltage substation will further create an opportunity to open new supply outlets in Borivali (East) and adjacent areas, in case there is demand for power from those areas, it added.
The newly commissioned extra high voltages substation will also enhance the power reliability, reduce losses and meet the increasing power demand, apart from reducing the ROW issues for the multiple 33kV cable laying in already congested areas, the company said.
Though Rinfra has conventional extra high voltage substations at Ghodbunder, Aarey Colony and Versova, the company said it needed more extra high voltage substations for Mumbai's transmission system.
