Volvo Cars rolls out three special models for the Volvo Ocean Race
05 Mar 2008
Volvo Cars has launched three specially designed Volvo Ocean Race models - the Volvo V70, Volvo XC70 and Volvo XC90 - ahead of the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race. The cars come in two colours - ocean blue and electric silver.
The company sold 4,500 special editions of Volvo V70s and X70s, during the debut Volvo Ocean race in 2001-02. The Volvo XC90 was a new addition to the ocean blue family in 2005-06 and the sales increased to 8,600 in the same year.
The 2008-09 race editions will reach the global dealers in June 2008 and the company expects to sell about 9,000 cars.
Germany, Sweden, Finland, Great Britain and Japan are the five largest markets for Volvo cars.
The new cars have impressive interiors with a stronger link to sailing. The stitching on the upholstery traces its roots to sail making. The aluminium detailing on the mats resembles clews. Interestingly, the movement of the ocean's waves has inspired the design of the unique wheels.
The cars are fitted with full leather upholstery in exclusive soft leather with the interior in soft beige or offblack, and the centre console and other details in a silk matt aluminium finish. The cars in the Volvo Ocean Race series can be specified with the full range of engine alternatives available for each respective model and market.
The Volvo Ocean Race is a gruelling ocean adventure race, which runs over 10 legs. The 2008-09 race will start on 4 October 2008 from Alicante in Spain and finish at St Petersburg, Russia, on 27 June 2009 with stops at Cape Town (South Africa), Kochi (India), Singapore, Qingdao (China), Brazil (Rio de Janeiro), Boston (USA), Galway (Ireland), Göteborg (Sweden) and Stockholm (Sweden).
