Microsoft Corp today announced that Xbox Music, a digital music service to that will take on Apple Inc's iTunes and Amazon.com Inc's Cloud Player, would be available for its Xbox game consoles tomorrow.

The service would be extended to cover Windows software-based computers and tablets, including the upcoming Surface tablet, from 26 October when Microsoft launches Windows 8. The service would be expanded to phones shortly.

The world's largest software maker has been trying for years to make the household living room an entertainment hub with its Xbox, that has sold over 67 million units since 2005.

Around 18 months ago, the company realised that Xbox users were spending half to 60 per cent of their time on entertainment services rather than video gaming, according to Xbox Music general manager Jerry Johnson.

According to Xbox spokesman Jose Pinero, nothing would prevent Windows 8 users from downloading services such as Spotify and Pandora, if they wanted them.

He said consumers would have a choice, they could install any other app.
