State-run National Hydro Power Corporation Ltd (NHPC) today signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding with the Orissa government and state-owned Orissa Hydro Power Corporation for setting up three hydel stations at the Hirakud reservoir.

The three projects would be set up in the downstream of river Mahanadi in Sambalpur, Sonepur and Boudh districts with zero displacement and no damage to the local ecology, Orissa chief minister Naveen Patnaik said.

NHPC and Orissa Hydro Power Corporation  will form a 51:49 joint venture company to implement the 100 MW Sindol, 100 MW Sindol-II and 120 MW Sindol-III hydro-electric projects in the first phase.

The three projects are expected to require an investment of Rs3,000 crore and generate an annual hydro electric power generation of 1090 MU from the combined 320 MW.

The three projects under the JVC would be set up in the downstream of river Mahanadi in Sambalpur, Sonepur and Boudh districts with zero displacement and no damage to the local ecology, the chief minister said.

The state government will receive 12 per cent free power from these projects and 1 per cent of the cost of power generation would be used on peripherial development activities.

Recently, NHPC's surpassed the Excellent MOU generation target by 10.7 per cent in first quarter with all its power stations generating 6284 Million Units (MUs) more than the target of 5679 MUs. The generation of 6284 MUs achieved during the quarter was 10.5 per cent higher than the generation of 5689 MUs achieved year-on-year.
