Suzlon bags turbine order from Australia's AGL

India's wind power major Suzlon Energy Ltd on Tuesday said its Australian subsidiary has entered into an agreement with AGL Energy, Australia's biggest electricity and gas retailer, for providing 63 turbines for a $341million wind-power project in South Australia.

Suzlon Energy Australia Pty Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company, has signed a contract with AGL Energy Ltd for turnkey delivery, which includes engineering, procurement and construction of the entire wind farm, using Suzlon's S88-2.1 mw wind turbine generators and creating a capacity of 132.3 mw, Suzlon said.

Last month, the two firms had entered into an agreement for supply of 54 units of Suzlon's wind turbine generators, translating to 113.4 mw of capacity.

The company did not disclose the exact value of the transaction. The turnkey delivery includes the engineering, procurement and construction of the entire wind farm that will comprise of 63 units of Suzlon's translating to 132.30 MW of capacity.

The Sydney-based AGL also informed the Australian Securities Exchange that it has entered into the engineering and construction agreement with Suzlon's Australian unit for the 132-mw Hallett 4 project. One megawatt can power about 1000 Australian homes.

Suzlon Energy Australia also has options to build two other projects for AGL, which may get a discount on the orders. Australia has a target to boost power generated from renewable energy to 45,000 gigawatt-hours in 2020, from the existing 9500 gwh target in 2010, to help reduce greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.
