Yahoo! launches new Lab in Bangalore, India

Bangalore: Global Internet search service provider, Yahoo! Inc, plans to expand its Indian R&D operations with the launch of Yahoo! Labs in Bangalore, the company's first in India.
Dr Rajeev Rastogi has been appointed as vice president and head of the new lab. Rastogi was earlier executive director of the Bell Labs Research Centre in Bangalore. He was Bell Labs fellow and distinguished member of its technical staff..
Yahoo mentioned that the lab would be a centre of excellence for the next generation search and advertising technologies. The lab will focus on making the web more user- friendly and simple for surfers and advertisers.
The company intends to assemble a top team of scientists and engineers under Rastogi to deliver new technologies in the areas of information extraction and machine learning, multimedia and query processing.
Rastogi noted that the company is focused on pioneering research and technology to enable users find web searching a more useful exercise.
Dr Prabhakar Raghavan said that Rastogi's background and expertise in product development, as well as his vast experience in research would strengthen the company's leadership in international research and technology and also leverage knowledge from across the region.
