Government
develops rating system for green buildings
20 November 2007
Mumbai: The government
has developed a national rating system for assessing the performance of green
buildings or environment-friendly constructions, minister of state for new and
renewable energy Vilas Muttemwar said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. The
rating system aims to catalyse the speedy adoption of building techniques, technologies
and procedures that will promote design and construction of energy efficient and
sustainable buildings in the country, he said. The
rating system has been developed through interactions with various stakeholders
including private developers, academic and research institutions, practising architects,
ministries and agencies. It
will function under the advice and direction of eminent architects, engineers,
builders, experts and officials from departments and agencies concerned. Green
building is the practice of increasing the efficiency of buildings and their use
of energy, water, and materials, and reducing building impacts on human health
and the environment, through better siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance,
and removal the complete building life cycle. Other
commonly used terms include sustainable design and green architecture; however,
while good design is essential to green building, the actual operation, maintenance,
and ultimate disposal or deconstruction of the building also have very significant
effects on buildings' overall environmental impact.
