Food price inflation eases further to 16.30 per cent

The annual rate of inflation based on the wholesale price index of food articles dropped further to 16.30 per cent during the week ended 6 March 2010 from 17.81 per cent in the previous week.

Build-up of inflation for the `food articles' group during the financial year so far was 15.77 per cent against 6.49 per cent in the comparable week of the previous financial year.

Food inflation stood at 7.57 per cent during the comparable week of the previous year.

The index for the 'food articles' group declined 1.1 per cent to 282.6 (provisional) from 285.7 (provisional) in the previous week due to lower prices of urad and arhar (-6 per cent each), tea and fruits and vegetables (-4 per cent each), moong (-3 per cent), eggs (-2 per cent) and masur, fish-marine, gram, bajra and wheat (-1 per cent each). However, the price of jowar (1 per cent) moved up.

The inflation rate based on the wholesale price index of non-food articles stood at 13.99 per cent during the week ended 6 March 2010.

Build-up of inflation for the `non-food articles' group during the financial year so far was 12.68 per cent against a negative (-)6.09 per cent in the comparable week of the previous financial year.
