Britain not producing enough engineers: Sir James Dyson

news
17 August 2011

Engineering innovator and English industrial designer settled in Australia, Sir James Dyson, has warned that he may be forced to take his research and development operations out of Britain due to a shortage of engineers.

According to Sir James, known for his invention of the dual cyclone bagless vacuum cleaner and a bladeless fan, a lack of graduate and post-graduate engineers was hurting his business.

He said not enough engineers were coming out of universities and it was holding up projects. He added British companies would move abroad if they could not get the engineers.

Responding to a question whether he could move operations overseas if the situation warranted, Sir James said he would need to if the situation did not improve. He said it was the last thing he wanted to do. He added his business was trying to recruit in Britain but in the event it could not get people, it would have to consider a move offshore.

Though Dyson moved manufacturing operations to Malaysia in 2003, the company still carries out all of its research and development in Malmesbury, Wiltshire.

The threat of a move, though there was no hint that one was imminent, would be seen as a blow by the government, which is trying to rebalance the financial services heavy economy towards engineering and design-based industries.
