China car sales soar by 83.62 percent in September news
14 October 2009

China's car sales crossed the one-million mark for the seventh month in a row in September as sales rose by 83.62 per cent from a year earlier to 1.15 million units on the back of government incentives.

China is the world's largest vehicle market.

China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) said that sales of cars, sport-utility vehicles and multipurpose vehicles soared by 84 per cent to 1.015 million, an increase of 18.3 per cent from August.

Total vehicle sales, including cars, buses and trucks were 1.33 million units last month, up 77.88 per cent from a year earlier.

Total sales rose to 9.66 million units for the first nine months of the year, up 34 per cent from a year earlier, CAAM said.

The consecutive rise in car sales for seven months was driven by the government reducing vehicle taxes and introducing auto subsidies in rural areas earlier this year after the global recession had seen a slump in auto sales. (See: China's auto sales post slowest growth in a decade)

Sales have been galloping in smaller cities as automakers were able to convince first-time car buyers with new models.

The leading seller for the month was SAIC-GM Wuling with sale of 93,735 units, followed by Shanghai Volkswagen with 70,561, Shanghai GM with 70,228, FAW Volkswagen 65,027 and Beijing Hyundai with 60,870

In January, China dethroned the US as the largest car market for the first time to make the world's third largest economy become the world's largest car market.

In the first half, US vehicle sales plunged by 35 per cent to 4.8 million. Sales slowed to an annual rate of 9.69 million cars and light trucks in June, according to Autodata Corp.

For the first nine months, China's passenger-vehicle sales rose 42 per cent to 7.2 million units, while industry wide vehicle sales rose 34 per cent to 9.7 million. In the US sales fell 27 per cent to 7.8 million vehicles for the same period.

In India car sales rose 20.61-per cent to 1,29,683 units in September against 1,07,517 units sold in the same month last year, data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed. (See: Car sales in India zoom 20.6 per cent in September)

India, like China, saw a spurt in vehicle sales across categories with an improving economy, the festival season, lowering of interest rates, and government incentives.
