The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has awarded the aerodrome license for the Indira Gandhi International Airport to Delhi International Airport (P) Ltd (DIAL). The Aerodrome License authorises DIAL to operate the IGI Airport under the provisions of the Aircraft Act 1934 and Aircraft Rules 1937.

DIAL plans to modernise Delhi Airport to help cater to the growing passenger and cargo traffic. The master plan for the same has been recently submitted to the ministry of civil aviation and the Airports Authority of India. The master plan envisions the construction of a new integrated passenger terminal to cater to the both domestic and international traffic.

This terminal will be ready before the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

Simultaneously DIAL has implemented a number of steps to improve the existing airport infrastructure. For example, duration of simultaneous runway operations has been increased along with the addition of several new rapid exit taxiways. As a result waiting time for aircraft on the ground and in the air has considerably reduced.

Inside the passenger terminals new baggage X-ray machines have been added, which have reduced check in times for passengers. In addition new passenger seating has been introduced in the terminals. Better flooring and lighting, improvement of aesthetics such as redesigning the facade of the buildings and rest room renovation has also been carried out. These steps have greatly benefited the passengers and airlines alike.
