Average internet speed in India likely to jump 40% over next year: report

The average internet speed in India is likely to jump by over 40 per cent to 1.8 Mbps in the next 12 months thanks to investments in high-speed fibre network and affordable data plans, according to a report by cloud computing firm Akamai Technologies, according to PTI.

The average internet user in India could expect a speed of 1.3 Mbps (megabytes per second) in the first quarter of 2013.

On the basis of current industry growth trends, an increase between 40 per cent and 50 per cent in connection speed could be expected over the next 12 months, according to Akamai Technologies director of products for Asia Pacific and Japan Bruno Goveas.

He added this translated to a speed of 1.7 to 1.8 Mbps.

India witnessed an average speed 1.0 Mbps in the first quarter of 2012. He said there had thus been an increase of 0.3 Mbps over the last one year.

According to the report, the global average connection speed continued to grow in the first quarter of 2013, rising 4 per cent to 3.1 Mbps.
