Bangalore: Indian President A P J Abdul Kalam will inaugurate this year's edition of Bangalore IT.com, billed as Asia's largest information and communication technology event, scheduled to be held from 28 October to 1 November.

Sources at the Karnataka state IT department say after inaugurating the event Kalam will interact with about 1,200 school children at the Student's Internet World. He is also expected to participate in the panel discussion on e-governance at the Vidhana Soudha on 28 October.

More than 250 companies are expected to participate in the fifth edition of Bangalore IT.com despite the slowdown in the sector. The department expects a better participation this year with the improving industry situation, especially after the 11 September attacks.

Last year, about 250 companies participated in the event, which generated business worth $250 million and attracted over 2 lakh visitors of which nearly 60,000 were business visitors. This year the organisers expect BangaloreIT.com to do business of over $250 million.

The event is targeted at a larger audience, highlighting the emerging sectors within IT such as business process outsourcing, e-governance and banking and finance. Countries such as Germany, Singapore, the UK, Sri Lanka, Korea, Japan and Mauritius have already confirmed participation.
