Mumbai: Epson has unveiled a prototype postcard-sized mini-projector using an LED light source. With a footprint of just 13.8 by 10.3cm (just smaller than a sheet of A6 paper) and a slender profile, the 500-gram prototype can fit easily onto a human palm. The product is currently on display at the IFA trade show being held in Berlin, Germany.

Although the company has no immediate plans to market the mini-projector, company representatives believe that the prototype demonstrates just how compact mobile 3LCD projectors could one day become. "Projector using 3LCD technology already have advantages in terms of bright, natural images that are easy on the eyes," says Koichi Kubota, general manager, projector marketing, Epson.

In addition to allowing a more compact design, LED light sources provide several advantages including immediate projection readiness, a long running time, and swift switch-off. The use of an LED light source in a projector is a first for 3LCD.

With 11.3 per cent the share for front projectors world-wide in fiscal 2004 (Source: Decision Tree Consulting), Epson's popular range of projectors for education, business and home entertainment make the company the global market leader.

"The current development is the latest in a long series of technical breakthroughs for Epson. says Tushad Talati, head, brand and communication, Epson India.
