Frontliners start '08 on a quiet note; Midcaps party

CNBCThe frontliners started the year 2008 on a quiet note. Sensex and Nifty ended the day flat amid a choppy session. Selling pressure was seen in select telecom and IT stocks. Selective buying was seen in power, realty, bank and FMCG. Broader markets have outperformed the frontliners giving markets positive breadth.

Most of the Asian and European markets were closed on account of New Year.

Sensex closed up 13.72 points or 0.07% at 20300.71, and the Nifty up 5.75 points or 0.09% at 6144.35.

About 2418 shares have advanced, 651 shares declined, and 36 shares are unchanged.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 9,935.03 up 1.5%.

The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 13,703.07 up 2.7%.
