Market ends weak: Oil, midcaps, smallcaps down

The markets closed the day on a weak note with the broader markets seeing a sharp cut. However, the frontline indices closed marginally in red amid volatility. Sensex swung 400 points and Nifty swung 100 points during the day. Oil and gas stocks were among the top losers followed by auto, bank, capital goods and FMCG stocks. Sugar stocks ended higher with Sakhti, Bannari, Shree Renuka among the top gainers.
Among the top frontline losers were RPL, BPCL down 6% each followed by ICICI Bank and BHEL down 2.5% each.
Sensex is down 3.55 points or 0.02% at 20869.78, and the Nifty down 15.85 points or 0.25% at 6272.00.
About 797 shares have advanced, 2141 shares declined, and 20 shares are unchanged.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 9,769.99 down 0.5%.
The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 13,369.95 down 1%.
