Market ends deep in red: Midcaps, metal, FMCG crack

CNBCThe markets ended deep in red after an extremely volatile session. The opening was strong but by the end of the day Sensex was down nearly 600 points from the day's high. Nifty was down nearly 200 points from the day's high. NSE Advance:Decline was 1:11. Barring bankex all the BSE sector indices ended with a deep cut. Metal, FMCG, IT, power and oil stocks were among the top losers.

CNX Midcap was down 3% and smallcap index was down over 3.8%

RPL was down 6%, followed by SAIL, GAIL, NTPC, Relaince Energy, Tata Steel and Reliance Communication.

Sensex closed down 287.70 points or 1.38% at 20582.08, and the Nifty down 115.05 points or 1.83% at 6156.95.

About 388 shares have advanced, 2557 shares declined, and 17 shares are unchanged.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 9,440.45 down 3.4%.
