Markets end strong but off day's high

CNBCThe markets opened with impressive gap up today on the back of good amount buying seen in the realty, IT, capital goods and metal space coupled with favourable cues from the global markets. Sensex and Nifty traded extremely strong in the first half of trade but could not maintain its gains and gave up gains on account of some profit booking seen in the FMCG, metals and pharma stocks at higher levels and finally shut shop with significant gains.

BSE smallcaps and midcaps were also very strong in todays trade and the market breadth was also positive with advance decline ratio of 6:1. Volume was relatively muted today.

Sensex ended up 417.74 points or 2.29% at 18660.32, and the Nifty was up 146.25 points or 2.75% at 5463.50. On BSE, about 2325 shares advanced, 635 shares declined, and 47 shares remained unchanged. BSE Smallcap ended up 2.87% at 10361.78. BSE midcap was up 3.14% at 8004.91. 

BSE auto index ended up 2.05% at 5107.70. Ashok Leyland, Hero Honda and Escorts were the top gainers in auto space. 

BSE bankex was up 2.03% at 11110.91. Oriental bank, Union bank, IOB and Canara bank were few top performers.

BSE capital good index ended up 2.21% at 16797.31. Triveni Eng, ABB, Greaves Cotton were the top gainers.
