Broadcom set to finalize $69 billion VMWare acquisition

In a significant development in the technology industry, Broadcom announced on Wednesday, 22 November 2023, that it has successfully concluded its $69 billion acquisition of cloud computing firm VMWare, marking one of the largest takeover deals in the sector. The acquisition underwent rigorous scrutiny from regulators worldwide.

Broadcom, a leading chipmaker, confirmed that it has obtained all necessary regulatory approvals for the acquisition, with China granting its approval on Tuesday, 21 November 2023. However, the approval comes with additional restrictive conditions, a move that has been closely watched by industry observers.

The Chinese regulator specified in a statement that VMWare's server software should remain compatible with local hardware, and the acquisition should not impose restrictions on customers regarding the purchase and utilization of Broadcom's hardware products, including storage adapters.

Concerns among investors had risen in recent weeks following reports suggesting that escalating tensions between the United States and China could potentially derail the deal. In October, there were speculations that China's regulator might intervene negatively due to the heightened Sino-U.S. relations.

The tensions between Beijing and Washington had heightened, notably after the Biden administration implemented stricter controls on the export of high-end chips to China in October 2023.

In response to the announcement, Broadcom shares experienced a marginal decline of more than 1%, while VMWare shares were down 4.6%. The deal, initially anticipated to conclude by 26 November 2023, faced some technical impacts on share movements, primarily attributed to arbitrage trades surrounding the acquisition, according to brokerage firm Bernstein.

Despite the challenges and uncertainties, the successful closure of this high-profile acquisition is expected to reshape the landscape of the technology industry, consolidating Broadcom's position in the market and unlocking new possibilities in cloud computing.
