NSE emerges as largest bourse in terms of equity trades: report
06 Aug 2012
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has emerged as the largest bourse in terms of number of trades in the equity segment during the first half of 2012, according to an agency report.
Quoting the latest global ranking compiled by the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE), the report said NSE had reported a total of 735,474 trades in the equity segment during January-June 2012, making it the world's largest exchange on this parameter.
According to the Paris-based federation, the total market capitalisation of exchanges affiliated to it increased by 5.3 per cent in the first half of 2012. WFE is a trade association of 54 publicly regulated stock, futures and options exchanges.
The rise in market capitalisation was mainly attributed to markets in the Americas and Asia-Pacific regions, according to figures released today by the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE).
The market capitalisation in the Europe-Africa-Middle East (EAME) region was flat during the sovereign debt crisis in Europe and appreciation of the US dollar. In the Americas and Asia-Pacific regions, it increased by 9.1 per cent and 4.8 per cent respectively.
Despite the higher market capitalisation, the total value of share trading of WFE member exchanges continued to decrease significantly falling 14 per cent in the first half of 2012 after an earlier drop of four per cent in the second half-year of 2011, said the federation.
