04 Mar 2011
Congress leader and former minister of human resources at the centre Arjun Singh passed away in New Delhi today. Singh, who was recently dropped from the Congress Working Committee, was a minister in the Manmohan Singh cabinet from 2004 to 2009.
Elected to Parliament from Madhya Pradesh, Arjun Singh belongs to the Churhat Jagir under the former princely state of Rewa in Madhya Pradesh.
A hard-core Nehru family loyalist, Arjun Singh failed to consolidate his position in the Congress party and instead ran into controversies often.
Earlier, as a minister in the PV Narasimha Rao cabinet, he resigned in the wake of the Babri Masjid demolition to form the All India Indira Congress, along with Narayan Dutt Tiwari, former union minister and ex-chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.
However, he lost in the 1996 Lok Sabha elections from Satna in Madhya Pradesh and later returned to Congress and lost again from Hoshangabad in Madhya Pradesh.
He served as chief minister of Madhya Pradesh three times, was union minister and governor of Punjab for a short period.
