Acer Computer International Ltd. has announced the incorporation of its Indian subsidiary, Acer India (Pvt) Ltd, which will be headquartered in Bangalore. Acer had got its clearance from the Foreign Investments Promotion Board in July this year to set up a wholly owned subsidiary for manufacturing, marketing and selling the Acer brand of PC products in India.
Acer is planning to build more manufacturing units in India. The company already has a plant in Bangalore. The new units will help the Taiwanese company expand its operations in the country. The plants will have international level facilities to produce the company's range of PCs, servers and other products.
The immediate focus for the company will be to consolidate its sales, marketing and support initiatives for the Acer brand of PCs, notebooks, servers and home PCs. The company plans to test market its products like workstations and Windows-based terminals. The department of electronics has stipulated that these should be restricted to the products to be manufactured in India.
Acer has a complete line of PC products, from desktops and servers to notebooks. "With a current installed base of over 125,000 Acer computers in the country today, India, to Acer, offers an accessible, potential market. We will strive to make Acer a leading PC brand in India," says Arun Sinha, managing director, Acer India (Pvt) Ltd.
Acer, a Taiwanese company, is the world's third-largest PC manufacturer and was established in 1976. It offers a broad selection of industry-leading high-end servers, multimedia PCs, notebooks, computer peripherals, components and semiconductors. It has operations spanning 37 countries worldwide and had a revenue of $6.7 billion in 1998.
Acer India's efforts to consolidate its multi-distribution channel has resulted in the finalisation of channel partnerships with Thakral Computers Ltd and Unison Technologies, in addition to its existing distribution partner, Wipro. Thakral Computers is its national level distributor with over 250 resellers in 16 cities, and support services.
