Chennai:
Even as global information technology security software
majors like Symantec Corporation are contemplating launching
security software for mobile phones, the Mumbai-based
Innova Technologies has come out with a novel product
Virtual Mobile Security (VMS).
The
software, priced at Rs499, once loaded in a cell phone
safeguards the images, phone numbers, short messages and
others stored from being accessed by others. It also helps
the owner to retrieve the stored numbers via SMS.
According
to the CEO Kshitiz Jain, 25, it is the content stored
in a handset that is priceless, not the handset. The content
could be misused if the handset falls in to the wrong
hands.
"When
an unauthorised user changes the SIM card or when the
lost handset receives a user defined SMS from any other
instrument, the VMS software makes the lost instrument
unusable."
Explaining
the security solution, he says, the VMS software starts
once it is installed. It keeps a constant vigil on the
SIM card and detects changes in usage patterns of a lost
handset. It also silently activates the handset''s loudspeaker
so that the owner can hear an unauthorised person''s calls
The
software can be programmed to notify an alternate number
provided by the owner, in case the SIM card on the lost
handset is changed.
What
is more, the software also provides the identity of the
new SIM card and the geographical location, service provider,
cell site identity, where the handset is being used to
the alternate numbers provided by the owner.
The
owner of a lost handset can also send a user-defined SMS
to his cell number to disable the instrument permanently.
Moreover, on receiving the SMS, the software causes the
handset to sound an alarm till the battery is drained.
The
display screen of the lost phone will also show the name
and address
of the real owner, which makes it difficult for thieves
to selling the phone some one else. According to Jain
the company is in talks with various mobile phone retailers
in Tamil Nadu for selling the software. "We hope
to earn around Rs2 crore during the first year of commercial
sales," remarked Jain.
