Shiv Nadar
steps down as chairman of NIIT
New Delhi: Shiv Nadar, founder and chairman
of NIIT, has stepped down as chairman of the company. Rajendra
Pawar, the present vice-chairman and managing director,
will now be the executive chairman of NIIT. The formal announcement
will be made after NIIT's board meeting in October 1999.
Earlier, Vineet Nayyar was
elevated as chairman of another group company, HCL Comnet.

Khursheeda
Mody is MD of UTV
Mumbai: Khursheeda Mody has assumed charge
as managing director of United Television. She has taken
over from Ronnie Screwvala, chairman and managing director
of the company, who has stepped down to take charge of
the Unilazer group as chairman. Mr Screwvala continues
to be executive chairman of UTV, a Unilazer group company.
Ms Mody was earlier with
the World Gold Council and has also served with Johnson
& Johnson in India, Thailand and Australia and with
Saatchi & Saatchi in Thailand.
Meanwhile, two senior personnel,
Manish Popat, chief of airtime sales, and Noshir Desai,
chief executive officer of United Studios, have left the
Unilazer group.

Manu
Sawhney is ESPN-Star Sports chief
New Delhi: Manu Sawhney is the new chief
of ESPN-Star Sports. He replaces R.K. Singh, who has quit
the company to join Zee Telefilms.
Mr Sawhney was earlier vice-president,
sales and marketing at ESPN-Star Sports. He has been promoted
to the post of managing director.
Mr Sawhney has been with
ESPN-Star Sports since 1996 and has been instrumental
in setting up a regional distribution infrastructure for
the channel as an encrypted service. He had also conceptualised
and implemented the brand positioning strategy for both
ESPN and Star Sports.

Sharda
Singh may get extension
Calcutta: Sharda Singh, chairman and
managing director of Uco Bank, is likely get an extension
of his term of office, which is ending on 31 December
1999.
The loss-making bank is
now implementing its headquarters restructuring and is
revamping its operations under the Verma panel. The bank
had recorded an operating profit of Rs 26.69 crore for
the quarter ended 30 June 1999 compared with Rs 11.46
crore during the corresponding period in 1998-99.

DaimlerChrysler
president may exit
London: DaimlerChrysler is to announce
the exit of Thomas Stallkamp as president of the German-US
car company. DaimlerChrysler is undertaking a management
overhaul and at least five senior directors are likely
to be replaced or demoted. The revamp is intended to strengthen
the hands of Jurgen Schrempp, the company's joint chairman
and chief executive.
Mr Stallkamp has been a
popular manager. He is credited with the recent agreement
between DaimlerChrysler and the United Auto Workers union.
He has also been an ardent champion of the Chrysler brands.
