Vaghul exits HDFC board
Bangalore: Narayan Vaghul has stepped down formally from the board of
HDFC. Sources said the resignation is on account of ICICI, of which he is the chairman,
planning to enter the housing finance sector in a big way.
Another director, R.K. Bhargava, is also understood
to have stepped down. The company has inducted Mr R.V.S. Rao, general manager, as an
executive director.

Essar Steel CFO
Mumbai: V.G. Raghavan is the new chief financial officer of Essar Steel.
He will be based in Mumbai and will be in complete charge of all financial functions of
the company.

Tayal is Bank of Rajasthan
part-time chairman
Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India has appointed Pravin Kumar Trayal as
part-time chairman of the Bank of Rajasthan. The RBI had recently sacked six nominee
directors of the bank belonging to the Bangur group of Calcutta.
Mr Tayal will chair the annual general meeting of the bank
on 5 October.

Ex-Pfizer chief donates $35 M
to Duke varsity
Durham: Edmund Pratt, once a Duke University engineering student, who
became the chairman of Pfizer, has donated $35 million to endow the university's
engineering school. The university has renamed the school in Mr Pratt's honour.
Mr Pratt, 72, graduated from Duke in 1947 and joined
Pfizer in 1964. He was named president in 1971 and chairman and chief executive officer
the following year. He retired in 1992.
Said Mr Pratt: "As an early graduate of the
engineering programme, from nearly when it began, I have been proud to see the school
continue to improve and raise to national leadership in critically important fields such
as biomedical engineering
The largest gift to the university came from James B. Duke
in the form of a donation of $40 million, which transformed the erstwhile Trinity College
into Duke University.
