Civic honours for Dhirubhai Ambani
Mumbai: Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani,
chairman of the Reliance group was felicitated in Mumbai by the Brihanmumbai Municipal
Corporation, as a tribute to his spirit of enterprise, excellence and achievement. The
civic honour almost immediately came after Mr Ambani was conferred the Man of the
Century award by the Chemtech Foundation.
Dhirubhai, as he is popularly known to his
five million shareholders, with his extraordinary guts and gumption over last two decades
laid the foundation of Reliance Industries, the largest private sector group in India. .
Dhirubhais made history in annals of Mumbai stock market, when way back in 1977, he
expanded the investor base of the Indian stock markets, to encompass even remote villages
of Gujarat by taking RIL public.
Ever since his rapport with the company's
huge investor base across the country is considered legendary. "Our dreams have to be
bigger, our ambitions higher, our commitment deeper and our efforts greater," he said
while accepting Wharton Dean's medal last year.
True to Dhirubhais vision, the
Reliance group has just completed the Rs 25,000-crore integrated Jamnagar refinery complex
in Gujarat, the world's largest greenfield project with a capacity to refine 27 million
tons of crude per annum. The group has also made significant forays into the telecom and
other new economy sectors in recent years.
