Ohio University bestows honorary
doctrate on Ratan Tata
Mumbai: Ratan Tata,
chairman of the century-old Tata Group, was awarded an honorary doctorate in business
administration by the Ohio State University (OSU).
According to an university release, the
award was given for his contribution in restructuring the 80-company Group into a more
competitive and responsive, 21st century global entity. The release added that his
stewardship and foresight have provided opportunities for a new generation of
foreign-trained Indian engineers and researchers to work for the benefit of their native
country.

Ken Eldred and Baba Kalyani to
form call centre
Mumbai: Epicentre, a 5,000-seat call
centre is being planned in city by two leading businessmen. Baba Kalyani, promoter of the
Kalyani group and Ken Eldred, co-founder of Ariba are in this joint venture together. Both
businessmen are investing in the venture in their individual capacities.
The JV has former Escotel chief
executive, K Vijay Rao, as the third partner in the project which will have an initial
capital of $5 million. Rao will also be the companys managing director and chief
executive officer.
The call centre will initially handle the
back-office work for American Express and Capital One, two of the largest credit card
companies in the US. The centre is currently in a pilot stage at Powai, a suburb of
Mumbai.
At a later stage, the company also proposes to expand its services portfolio to areas like
technology and products for software firms. Software companies, particularly those which
sell products, often have to make large-scale investments in setting up back-end
processes, to address client queries about the product. Epicentre plans to tap this
growing market.
