Forbes 500 CEO list has three
Indian-Americans
New York: The recent
Forbes 500 top CEO list has three Indian-Americans figuring in the list. The annual
feature by the Forbes magazine lists chief executives who have given the best bang
for the buck in delivering profits to their companies.
Leading the Indian list is Steve Sanghi, chairman and chief executive of Microchip
Technologies who is ranked 70th, followed by Shailesh Mehta of Providian Financial, ranked
156th and Ray Irani of Occidental Petroleum, ranked 253rd.
Noted value investor Warren Buffet topped the list for being the lowest paid and
delivering the most. He delivered 1 per cent growth for just $19,000, being paid only
$500,000 for the period.
The CEOs are ranked from least expensive (the best value) to most expensive (the worst).
Luckily, no Indian-American made it to the list of 15 worst performers.
Forty-four-year-old Mr. Sanghi, born in Chandigarh and having come to the US in 1976, is
one of the rare younger group of chief executives. He has been heading the semiconductor
company, Microchip, based in Chandler, Arizona, since August 1990.
Mr. Shailesh Mehta is the chairman of the board and chief executive of Providian, the
fifth-largest bank-card issuer in the country, based in San Francisco.
