Zydus chairman Patel passes away
Mumbai: Zydus
Group chairman Ramanbhai B Patel passed away on Wednesday morning. A
first-generation entrepreneur, Mr Patel was one of the stalwarts of
the Indian pharmaceutical industry.
Born in south Gujarat in August 1925, he began his career as a
lecturer at the LM College of Pharmacy, a premier institute in
Ahmedabad, a company statement said.
At a time when India was heavily dependent on imports of drugs and
pharmaceuticals, Mr Ramanbhai set out to prove that an indigenous
company could provide innovative, research-based quality medicines. He
turned pharma entrepreneur in 1951 and laid the foundation for Cadila.
Today, Zydus Cadila is the fourth largest pharma group in the country.
Mr Patel also took an active interest in promoting pharmaceutical
education in Gujarat and was a member on the management board and
advisory committees of several pharmacy colleges in the state.
He has also been associated with the Pharmacy Council of India since
1977 as member of the executive committee and was conferred several
awards, including the President of Indias Import Substitution Award
in 1973 for inventing a new process technology for glibenclamide, the
Glory of India Award in 1991 at Washington and the Lifetime
Contribution Award by Express Pharma Pulse.
