Scindia dies in plane crash
Kanpur:
Former union minister and senior Congress leader Madhavrao Scindia
died in a plane crash near Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.
All the occupants of the 10-seater plane, including four
journalists, Mr. Scindias secretary Rupinder Singh died on the
spot.
Mr. Scindia was to
address a public meeting at Kanpur. The plane left Delhi at 12:49
pm and was to reach Kanpur at 13:50 pm (IST), but one of the
plane's engines caught fire and it crashed near Mainpuri.
All the eight bodies recovered near the site were charred beyond
recognition. Among the passengers were journalists Anju Sharma of
Hindustan Times, Sanjeev Sinha of Indian Express and Ranjan Jha
and Gopal Bisht of Aaj Tak. The plane's pilot Ray Gautam and
co-pilot Ritu were also killed.
The Madhya Pradesh
government has declared a three-day state mourning beginning
October 1 as a mark of respect to the senior Congress leader and
deputy leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha.

Kalam escapes miraculously
Bokaro:
India's top scientist and principal scientific advisor to the
Government A P J Abdul Kalam had a miraculous escape when he
survived after the helicopter in which he was travelling came down
in Bokaro on Sunday.
The helicopter's rotor broke soon after take off and the chopper
landed with a thud from a height of about 100 metres. All five
persons on board, including two crew members are safe. An inquiry
has been ordered into the incident.

Inflation
falls to 4.93%

Delhi: The annual inflation rate fell by 0.07 percentage
points to 4.93 per cent for the week ended September 15.
The point-to-point inflation rate based on wholesale price index (WPI)
for all commodities (base: 1993-94 = 100) fell from 5.0 per cent
in the previous week due to fall in the primary items' prices. The
index was 5.91 per cent a year ago.
WPI, however, remained unchanged at the previous week's level of
161.8 and the index was 154.2 in the previous year.
The consumer price index for industrial workers (CPI-IW) rose
sharply by 1.15 per cent to 5.19 per cent in August as compared to
4.04 per cent in July, while the index based on WPI rose by three
points to 466 points.
Primary articles became cheaper by 0.1 per cent to 170.9 from
171.1 in the previous week, despite a 0.5 per cent rise in
non-food items' price. The index was 162.2 a year ago.
Fuel and manufactured products remained firm at the previous
week's levels of 226.1 and 144.3, respectively, and indices were
199.5 and 141.4 in the previous year.
