GM cotton
crop to be destroyed

Delhi: The Union environment ministrys genetic engineering
approval committee (GEAC) has ordered the destruction of
genetically modified cotton grown illegally over hundreds of
hectares in Gujarat.
The GEAC decided to order the state bio-technology co-ordination
committee to destroy all standing crop. The crop is ready for
harvest, therefore there is immediate need to intervene. The
permission of GEAC is mandatory for the introduction of any GM
food or crops.
A GEAC team surveyed half a dozen plots in Gandhinagar district,
confirming the illegality.

Asha Bhonsle gets
Phalke award
New
Delhi: Noted singer Asha Bhonsle has been given the Dada Saheb
Phalke Award for 2000. The award for outstanding contribution to
the Indian film industry carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh, a
shawl and a swarna kamal.
Asha, younger sister of melody queen Lata Mangeshkar who also has
received the Phalke award, is popularly called India's
nightingale for her melodious renditions spanning six decades
and has the unique distinction of having sung nearly 12,000 songs
mainly in Hindi and also various other Indian languages.
