Kundankulam nuclear project gets govt nod
New Delhi: The government has accorded financial sanction for construction of Russian aided 2000 MW Kundankulam nuclear project in Tamil Nadu which is to cost Rs 13,171 crore.

While the first unit is slated to be commissioned by 2007, the second unit is scheduled to be completed by 2008, says an official release. Russia is extending a soft loan of Rs 6,416 crore for the project.

''The project will open a new window for the country in the high technology area of advanced Light Water Reactor (LWR) technology'', says the release.

India's forex reserves up $24 million
Mumbai: India's foreign currency reserves witnessed a rise of $24 million at $45,161 million during the week ended October 26.

The foreign currency assets rose by $25 million at $42,227 million, according to the Reserve Bank of India's weekly statistical supplement.

Special drawing rights saw a decline of $1million to $9 million while gold remained static at $2,925 million, it said.

Loans and advances to the central government increased by Rs 913 crore to Rs 3,415 crore while that to state governments showed a rise of Rs 894 crore to Rs 6,678 crore, RBI said.

For the fortnight ended October 19, aggregate deposits in case of scheduled commercial banks fell by Rs 1,213 crore (0.1 per cent) to Rs 10,49,300 crore.

Bank credit increased by Rs 1,587 crore (0.3 per cent) to Rs 5,44,125 crore. Food credit was also up by Rs 78 crore to Rs 50,280 crore while non-food credit was up by Rs 1,509 crore at Rs 4,93,845 crore. (PTI)

IDA, CII set up task force in China and Japan
Mumbai: The Infocom Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) has set up a task force with Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) to explore business opportunities in China and Japan.

A Singapore-India joint mission will visit China and Japan to explore business oppurtunities next year.

IDA has set up an office in Shanghai which would act as a strategic link between Bangalore, Singapore and Shanghai again," IDA senior manager Low Aik Lim added.

55 NTC mills to be revived
New Delhi: The Centre has decided to revive and modernise 55 of the 119 textile mills of the National Textiles Corporation (NTC) and wind up the rest, according to union minister of state for textiles Dhananjay Kumar.

The government has decided to give a one-time grant of Rs 2600 crore for revival and growth of NTC mills.

The revival and modernisation package was expected to help the mills attain optimum capacity, which, in turn, would help the textile sector make inroads into the world market.

US lifts sanctions on Indian rayon export
Kochi: The US has lifted the sanctions on export of Indian rayon garments to that country, according to union minister of state for textiles Dhananjay Kumar.

He said exports to US and European Union (EU) markets could be stepped up, once the quota system which imposes restrictions on exports, was lifted when the agreement comes to an end.

JNPT to redevelop bulk terminal
Mumbai: Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has invited an expression of interest for redevelopment of its bulk terminal into a container terminal of a capacity not less than one million twenty-foot equivalent units.

The project would entail re-development of bulk terminal site involving design, finance, construction, management and operation for a maximum licence period of 30 years on built, operate and transfer basis, JNPT said.

Interested parties have to submit their EOI's on or before January 10, 2002.

At present JNPT has two container terminals and one bulk terminal.

China Airlines to fly into Delhi from Jan
New Delhi: Taiwan-based China Airlines plans to start three flights a week between New Delhi and Taipei from January 2002.

China Airlines had started their cargo business in 1999.
China Airlines is the ninth largest airlines in the world in the cargo business and has a fleet capacity of over 55 aircraft. China Airlines has Air-India as their general sales agent.
