Gold demand declines
by 17 per cent
New Delhi: Gold demand in the country has sharply declined
by 17 per cent during July-September this year from last year's
level, World Gold Council (WGC) said.
While global gold demand for the third quarter (Jan-Sept) was 7
per cent below at 755 tonnes than previous year's level, in India
a six-week inauspicious period for gold purchases since August end
and volatile prices after September 11 deterred gold buying, the
WGC said.

TRAI
for no entry fee for Insat MSS service
New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)
on Monday recommended zero entry fee for Insat mobile satellite
system (MSS) reporting service licence, while pegging the licence
fee at 5 per cent for the first two years.
Insat mss reporting service, which enables transmission of
messages at a low data rate to a central hub from a handheld
terminal using satellite, should be treated as a new service under
the broad definition of value added service and and anyone wanting
to provide this service may be granted a separate licence, a TRAI
statement said here.

US
grant for Indian Railways
New Delhi: The United States has decided to give a grant of
$400,000 to the Indian Railways for further development of its
strategic investment planning techniques based on geographic
information system.
The railway has been using scientific techniques of project
evaluation as part of its long range decision support system
project. The first phase of the project has already been completed
with the assistance of the World Bank and the success of this
phase has motivated the second phase, fully financed by railways.

India's
mobile phone base up 80 per cent
New Delhi: The number of cellular phone subscribers in
India grew 80.02 per cent year-on-year to 5.011 million at the end
of October, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI)
said on Monday.
A total of 207,069 new mobile phone subscribers were added in
October. That was 29.3 per cent more than the number of new
subscribers added in October last year.

to give $455 m loans to India
Tokyo: Japan has decided provide India with 56 billion yen
($455 million) in loans for subway and power plant projects.
Tokyo's loans are aimed at helping the Indian government finance a
subway project in New Delhi and coal power plant construction in
southeast India.

Import
duty on sunflower, rapeseed oils cut
New Delhi: The government has cut customs duty on imported
crude sunflower, safflower, refined rapeseed and mustard oils, a
customs department notification said.
Fifty per cent duty will be levied on import of crude sunflower or
safflower oil up to 150,000 tonnes of total imports of these goods
in a financial year.
On imports above this quota the current duty of 75 per cent will
be levied, said the notification.
