Toon
war hots up
New Delhi: Disney's
planned foray into India with a 24-hour Hindi channel has heated
up war among cartoon networks. Local market leader Cartoon Network
is gearing up for a showdown by reinforcing its Indian programmes.
Cartoon Network plans to step up Indian content by increasing the
duration of Hindi-feed from the present level of 9 hours to 16
hours in 2002. The channel currently airs a 24-hour English feed
along with two-hours in Tamil.
In a bid to further build upon the popularity of its cartoon
characters, the channel would be soon launching comic titles as
well as activity books. The network also plans to step up
acquisition of Indian content over the next one year.
Disney has been running programming blocks on various channels
such as Doordarshan, Sony and Zee over the last five years.
Given the positive response, the $26-billion Walt Disney group
would not only roll out its own 24-hour pay channel in Hindi by
early next year, but would also come out with merchandising
related to Disney characters through theme parks and stores. The
media giant has earmarked an investment of around $30 million for
its Indian plans.
