BSNL slashes STD rates
New Delhi: BSNL has
slashed the rates of STD calls by a whopping 60 per cent.
A call between metro cities such as Delhi and Mumbai will now cost only Rs 9 a
minute during the peak hours instead of Rs 24 currently and in off peak hours
it will cost just Rs 4.50 a minute against Rs 6 earlier.
For calls within regions such as between Kolkata and Patna or Delhi and Kanpur
or Mumbai and Ahmedabad will cost only Rs 4.80 per minute against Rs 11 earlier
and in off peak hours this will come down to just Rs 2.40 per minute.

OPEC cuts
output for 6 months
Cairo: OPEC has decided
to cut its production by 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd) for six months
starting January 1, 2002.
OPEC said it made the decision after having reviewed the recent positive
announcements from non-OPEC oil producers namely Angola, Mexico, Norway, Oman
and the Russian Federation regarding their pledged reductions totalling 462,500
bpd and the current oil market situation.

New textiles
order issued
New Delhi:
The government has issued a new textiles (development and regulation) order,
2001, superseding the earlier order of 1993, diluting the powers of the
textiles commissioner to control production and supplies.
The new order has also simplified the
procedures for filing information with the government for installation of
textile machinery, production and markings of textiles. The powers of the
textile commissioner to control production and supply have also been diluted
while retaining his responsibility in respect of hank yarn obligation order,
reverse twist order and markings on textiles.

Anti-dumping
duties on 3 Chinese items
New Delhi: The government
has imposed anti-dumping duties on three more products from China. These are:
compact fluorescent lamps, thermal sensitive paper and hard ferrite ring
magnets of all grades and sizes.
According to notifications, the duty
on compact fluorescent lamps with choke imported from China will be equal to
the difference between the amount of $3.115 per lamp and the landed value of
the product.
The same level of duty will also apply on the product imported from Hong Kong.
In both the cases, the duty will be effective up to and inclusive of June 20
next year.

Tax
collections dip
New Delhi: Tax
collections dipped by about Rs 2,700 crore till mid-December as indirect tax
mop up dropped by 3.74 per cent even though direct taxes were up by a marginal
one per cent.
Total net tax collections was Rs 1,19,986 crore till mid- December which fell
short of last year's collection of Rs 1,22,723 crore.
Indirect Tax collections dipped by
3.74 per cent to Rs 76,711 crore till December 15, while Direct Tax mop up was
up by one per cent to Rs 43,275 crore.
The fall in indirect tax collections was on account of a 14 per cent decline in
Customs collections at Rs 28,279 crore so far this fiscal as compared to Rs
32,953 crore in the year-ago period.

MSEB to hike
power tariff by 4%
Mumbai: Maharashtra
State Electricity Board has received approval from the Maharashtra Electricity
Regulatory Commission to raise its tariff by four per cent.
The proposed hike would enable MSEB to mop up an additional Rs 452 crore.
