Indo-US accord signed on
security
Washington: India and
the US on 17 January signed an agreement on general security and military
information exchange as defence minister George Fernandes began his six-day
visit to the US.
The agreement would pave the way for greater technology cooperation between the
two countries.

Sai Baba survives attempt on
life
Bangalore: Godman
Puttaparthi Sai Baba survived a possible attempt on his life when a 26-year-old
youth attempted to shoot at him from an air pistol from close range at his
ashram on the city's outskirts.
Sai Baba was at the "Vrindavan Ashram" in Whitefield when Somasundara,
said to be hailing from Dharmapuri district in Tamil Nadu, attempted to open
fire at him during the "darshan" time in the morning.
The man was immediately overpowered by police and Seva Dal volunteers.

Mallya cleared of FERA charges
Bangalore: United
Breweries Ltd and its chairman Vijay Mallya, have been cleared of FERA
violation charges in the sponsorship of Kingfisher of the Benetton Formula One
team. The enforcement directorate has exonerated UB Vijay Mallya, and dropped
all charges, said a company press release.

FDI proposals worth Rs 437 crore
cleared
New Delhi: The
government on 17 January cleared 53 FDI proposals worth Rs 437 crore in sectors
such as automobiles, software development, chemicals and petro-chemicals, heavy
and light engineering and electrical industry.
The other areas of FDI proposals included steel, Internet Service Provider
(ISP), consultancy, integrated water supply, health and NFBC activities.

India's trade with China up 25%
New Delhi: India's
trade with China is estimated to have registered a growth of 25 per cent during
2000-01, rising to 2.29 billion dollars against 1.82 billion dollars in 1999-00
with overall exports to China jumping a 53 per cent during the period.
During 2000-01, India's exports to
China were valued at 829.24 million dollars, indicating a rise of over 53 per
cent compared to exports in 1999-00, while imports from China valued at 1467.9
million showed an increase of 14.09 per cent over the previous year.
Major items of India's exports to China are iron ore, marine products, plastics
and linoleum products, other ores and minerals, cotton yarn, fabrics amongst
others.
These items constitute 60 per cent of India's total export to China.
