Ratan
Tata is Chairman of VSNL
Mumbai: Tata
group chief Ratan Tata is the chairman of the reconstituted board of
VSNL following the signing of the shareholders' agreement with the
government for taking over VSNL.
S K Gupta was retained as managing director of the reconstituted board
of the privatised corporation. "We have nominated S K Gupta as MD
from our side. We also asked S K Sinha (finance director) to join the
board as a Tata nominee but he declined the offer," Ratan Tata
told reporters after handing over the cheque for Rs 1,439 crore in
lieu of the government's 25 per cent stake in the telecom major.
The Tatas also nominated N Srinath as third director out of its quota
of four places in the reconstituted board. Srinath would head an
integration committee to work out the synergies between the corporate
house's telecom venture and VSNL and plan the future growth strategy.
The Tata Group would also soon finalise the names of independent
directors for the reconstituted board, Ratan Tata said, and added that
the acquisition of VSNL would help the Tatas provide end-to-end
customer services at competitive rates.
