UP headed for hung assembly
New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh is headed for a hung assembly, while the Congress gained a clear majority in Punjab and Uttaranchal.

Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav has left for Lucknow as his party expected to win over 150 seats in the 403-member UP house. Yadav is a clear front-runner for forming a new government. The Congress is viewed as a prospective partner of the SP.

Next to the SP, the big winner in UP is the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which is set to register a tally in the region of 90 seats.

In both Punjab and Uttaranchal, the BJP strength has been reduced to less than a fifth of its strength in the outgoing assembly. The Siromani Akali Dal has retained ground in many of its traditional bastions.

There is considerable speculation about the Congress' chief ministerial nominee for Uttaranchal.
