New tourism policy cleared
New Delhi: The new tourism policy, approved by the union cabinet,
focusses on making tourism a multi-dimensional activity to enhance foreign
exchange earnings and employment, besides creating conditions for more foreign
direct investment in the tourism sector.
The new policy proposes to create a tourism development authority consisting of
senior officials of the government and tourism experts and professionals from
private sector.
A three-year development and marketing plan would be made for infrastructure
development, liberalisation of Indian skies and upgradation of airports,
uniformity of taxes and aggressive marketing abroad.
The government proposes to set up a tourism development fund to bridge the
critical infrastructural gaps and facilitate larger flow of funds.
