Govt effects major bureaucratic reshuffle
The appointments committee of the Cabinet on Friday approved a major bureaucratic reshuffle. Defence production and supplies secretary Subir Dutta has been appointed defence secretary succeeding Yogendra Narain, who is retiring this month-end.

PM Nair, secretary, ministry of non-conventional energy sources, will take over as defence production and supplies secretary in place of Mr Dutta, a 1967 batch IAS officer from the West Bengal cadre. Mr Nair is also a 1967 batch IAS officer.

In addition, 10 other senior bureaucrats posts have been reshuffled

Ambassadors told to raise travel advisory issues
All ambassadors and high commissioners of India have been told to raise the hasty travel advisories issued by the US, the UK, Australia, and Japan with their respective governments of accredition, and industry associations and prominent corporates in those countries.

Among countries where a specific travel advisory was issued, the envoys have been told to tell every important constituency that a war like situation does not exist on the border.

Direct Tax collection soars
Direct tax collection till June 18 has registered an impressive growth of over 50 per cent.

According to a senior finance ministry official, first reporting of advance corporate tax payments to the ministry this fiscal has the direct tax realisation spurt to Rs 8,442 crore till June 18, as against Rs 5,622 crore collected in the same period last year.

Companies submit 15 per cent of their expected tax liability in the fiscal through first installment of advance corporate tax by June 15. The installment normally reaches the government kitty during the second fortnight of the month.

1,213 foreign cos registered in '01
A total of 1,213 foreign companies as defined under Section 591 of the Companies Act, 1956 were registered in the country during 2001. Of these, 72 foreign companies established their places of business in the country.

The number of companies in the country has been increasing since 1993-94 following the emerging globalisation of Indian economy, according to an official statement.
