Nicholas Piramal files anti-cancer molecule patent
Nicholas Piramal India Ltd (NPIL) has filed its first patent for a new chemical entity (NCE) an anti-cancer molecule NP102. The new molecule is a cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4) inhibitor. The compounds are being sent to US for further toxicology and xenograft testing and the studies will be completed in six months, a NPIL release said.

Commenting on the development, NPIL director and chief scientific officer, Dr Swati Piramal said, "The companys plan for new chemical entities are now demonstrably well on course as per our road map. The business-driven R&D programme that is in place at our research centre the Quest Institute of Life Science is giving results." The company has filed an application in India and US.

Cadbury India Q2 net up
Cadbury India Ltd (Cadbury) has reported a net profit to Rs 19 crore for the second quarter ended June 16, 2002, as against Rs 9.36 crore in the corresponding quarter of last year. The profit was calculated after the inclusion of all exceptional items.

The companys net sales for the second quarter was at Rs 123.57 crore as compared to Rs 118.49 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Interest for the period saw a fall of 39.5 per cent to Rs 26 lakh from Rs 43 lakh last year.

Ranbaxy files application for intravenous form of Ranbezolid
Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd has followed up on its oral form of Ranbezolid, a drug that targets hospital-acquired infections, with an intravenous form.

RLL today filed an application for an investigational new drug (IND) with the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for the intravenous use of its molecule, Ranbezolid.

LG Electronics revenue growth soars
LG Electronics India has recorded revenue of Rs 1,577 crore during the first six months ended June 2002, thereby registering a 42 per cent growth over the corresponding period of last year.

The company clocked a turnover of Rs 721 crore in the digital display media division and Rs 856 crore in the digital appliances division.

Apollo Hospitals new initiative for diabetics
Apollo Hospitals has launched an economical package for diabetics called Diacontrol. It comprises investigations, regular patient counselling and lifestyle management, according to a company release.

Priced at Rs 150 per annum, the investigation package consists of an initial check followed by monthly and quarterly check-ups. The objective is to improve the overall quality of life of a diabetic.

A-I board puts off Fleet Acquisition
The board of Air India put off the decision on fleet acquisition by a fortnight. AI chairman and civil aviation secretary Roy Paul told media persons here after the meeting that the decision on fleet acquisition had been put off to the next board meeting in a fortnight at Delhi or Mumbai. It was lack of time which forced the board to defer the decision, he added.

JB Chemicals to set up unit for `Doktor Mom'
J B Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Ltd has plans to set up a unit to manufacture its `Doktor Mom' brand of cough lozenges and tablets in Daman.

The unit will be built as per international GMP standards at a projected cost of Rs 15 crore to be financed completely through internal accruals. The project is expected to go on stream by year 2003, Mr J.B. Mody, Chairman, told shareholders at the company's annual general meeting recently.

ITC to spend Rs 1,800 crore for modernisation
ITC Limited on Thursday said it was open to acquisition in areas of strategic interest and will spend about Rs 1,800 crore over the next two-three years on modernisation and expansion of its existing facilities.

"We will evaluate proposals for acquisitions received from time to time in areas of strategic interest, provided there is a reasonable opportunity to create greater value," a top ITC official said.

LML Launches 110-cc Motorcycle Freedom
LML unveiled a new 110-cc motorcycle Freedom on Thursday and announced plans to enter the 125cc and other engine displacement segments with lifestyle and basic commuter models and two four-stroke gearless scooters by 2003 as part of its turnaround strategy.

LML managing director Deepak Singhania told reporters at a press conference that with the launch of new motorcycles, the company would extend its product coverage to around 89 per cent of the market by 2003.

The 4-stroke, 110 cc motorcycle Freedom has been priced at Rs 40,050 (ex-showroom, Lucknow).
