consensus to help drug exports
New Delhi: With a strong convergence for allowing
those countries with little or no manufacturing capacity
in the pharmaceutical sector to import essential drugs
at cheaper cost under the compulsory licensing mechanism,
at the last weeks Sydney mini-ministerial, the focus
will now shift to the Geneva-based WTO where negotiators
will strive to hammer out a decision on the issue by December
31, the deadline set by the Doha ministerial.

high court judgment quashing a Central Board of Direct
Taxes circular exempting the Mauritius-based foreign institutional
investors from paying tax on capital gains in the country
under the double taxation avoidance treaty.

a public interest litigation challenging the Centres
disinvestment policy on the ground that the government
by selling its shares in PSUs has abdicated its duty towards

New Delhi: The government is likely to further
rationalise the tax structure in the textile sector by
extending the cenvat chain and allowing textile companies
to raise cheaper funds through external commercial borrowings
route.
