Drug
makers ask govt to exempt bulk imports from registration
New Delhi: The Indian Drug Manufacturers Association
(IDMA) has asked the government to exempt all bulk drugs
being imported into the country but not being manufactured
indigenously from registration provisions. A representation
to the health ministry has also asked for easing certain
other provisions of the import registration process for
drugs. From this month onwards, the government has introduced
mandatory registration of manufacturing facilities of
companies exporting drugs to India and a licence for all
drugs to be imported.

Plan
panel drafts priority agenda
New Delhi : The Planning Commission has come up
with a draft priority agenda of action for 2003-04 earmarking
174 areas under various ministries and departments where
action needs to be taken urgently. This is in line with
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayees speech at the
National Development Council (NDC) meeting in December
2002 in which he announced that a priority list would
be prepared on an annual basis to ensure implementation
of Tenth Plan, and action would be monitored regularly.
The agenda includes reducing disparities between states,
reviewing drug control order, finalising the civil aviation
policy, framing national policy for special economic zones,
evolving policy of disinvestment for loss making PSUs,
establishing national company law tribunal and competition
commission of India, acting on recommendations of foreign
direct investment (FDI) company and development of new
generation vaccines against certain communicable diseases

Inflation
zooms to 6.47 per cent
New Delhi: High prices of electricity and manufactured
products drove up inflation to two years highest figure
of 6.47 per cent for the week ended April 12 as against
a mere 1.37 per cent in the year-ago period. Tall claims
of government's anti-inflationary policies to check inflation
notwithstanding, price increase in essential commodities,
including fruits and vegetables, led to 0.30 per cent
hike in point-to-point wholesale price index (WPI) from
a week ago level of 6.17 per cent, apparently due to the
brisk buying compounded by fears on an imminent truckers
strike.
