Indo-Japanese
relations set for a great spring
After cautiously probing each other for years about building
a political partnership, New Delhi and Tokyo have finally
cleared the ground for a substantive strategic dialogue.
This is expected to take place during the visit of cabinet
minister and director general of Japanese defence agency
Shigeru Ishiba to the Capital.

Textile
row: Indo-EU negotiations on May 7
Bilateral talks between New Delhi and Brussels on some
of the key textile issues are scheduled to be held in
Brussels on May 7. The issues may include removal of quota
restrictions on India's textile exports under the WTO
agreement on textiles and clothing, frequent anti-dumping/anti-subsidy
investigations by the Union and greater market access
to the EU markets.

Tripartite
talks to operationalise north-south route
Russia, Iran and India plan to double their shipments
along the North-South corridor by the year 2005 taking
them to an annual 8 million tonne (mt). Senior officials
from the three countries met in Tehran on Wednesday to
make a move towards operationalising the corridor.

traders to pay less tax, car owners more
The economic committee of Uttar Pradesh cabinet on Thursday
announced relief in trade tax under various heads with
the twin purpose of "increasing the revenue generation
and giving relief in tax to traders." However, car
owners and certain others would have to pay more now.
