Rana sets textile export target at $16 billion
New Delhi: The textiles ministry has fixed the export target for 2003-04 at $16 billion, up by $1 billion from the last year's $15 billion target. Announcing this here on Friday, textiles minister Kashiram Rana he told reporters that exports during 2002-03 were valued at $13.8 billion, marginally falling short of the target of $15 billion. The achievement was, however, close to the $14 billion target fixed by the commerce ministry, he added. During 2001-02, exports amounted to $10.7 billion.

Don't let legal loopholes derail power bill
New Delhi: The government has been urged to ensure that the Electricity Bill, 2003, was not derailed on account of gaps in legislation. Intervening in the debate on the Bill in Rajya Sabha on Friday, Congress member Ashwani Kumar said it was necessary to make the Bill "an effective and credible framework for future reform in the electricity sector". Kumar cautioned the govt against ignoring the sanctity of contracts already entered into, lest the reform process was derailed in the states. In a federal polity, the sensitivities of states and their initiatives ought to be respe-cted. Competition and efficiency in the electricity sector was a national imperative, he added. The country still needed to add 1.4 lakh mw to its installed capacity, requiring about Rs 8 lakh crore, an amount that could not be expected to come from public resources.

Tunisia seeks JVs in oil, gas exploration
New Delhi: India and Tunisia have hammered out a multi-level exchange programme starting this month. "Tunisia is looking for partnerships and joint ventures in oil and gas drilling," Tunisian industry and energy minister Moncef Ben Abdallah said.The exchange programme will involve trade missions and technology transfer exercises. "There are possibilities of good partnerships with the small and medium enterprises which would give them the potential to grow, especially in the leather sector," he said.
