S-W
monsoon hits the Andaman coast 10 days in advance
New Delhi: The South-West monsoon has arrived over
the Indian territorial waters 10 days ahead of schedule.
It has already set in over the South Andaman Sea and the
adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. The satellite imagery
of the US-based Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies
(COLA) has shown that the monsoon will touch the Kerala
coast by May 21, and by May 26 the monsoon system would
cover Kerala and Karnataka. The usual date for monsoon
touching the south Andaman Islands is around May 25. The
cyclonic storm developed over the Bay of Bengal on May
11 had facilitated the early arrival of the monsoon. The
South-West monsoon has already arrived over the south
Andaman Sea and the adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal,
confirms deputy director-general of India Meteorological
Department S Subramanium.
