Urban development ministry rapped for financial jugglery
New Delhi: A parliamentary committee on ministry of urban development and poverty alleviation has charged the government for ‘financial jugglery’ and non-performance on the urban poverty front. The committee in its report stated that the department of urban employment and poverty alleviation did “financial jugglery just to give an impression that there is no decrease in budgetary estimate for 2003-04 over that of 2002-03”. The department has first reduced revenue section on Plan side and then correspondingly increased allocation under capital section on Plan side in the budgetary estimate of 2003-04, which clearly depicts that the poverty alleviation schemes of the department are not performing well, said the standing committee report.

Inflation further falls to 6.03 per cent
New Delhi: Cheaper fruits, petrol, diesel and manufactured products pushed down the rate of inflation by 0.11 per cent to 6.03 per cent for the week ended May 3, against a mere 1.56 per cent in the year-ago. Continuing its free fall for the third consecutive week, the wholesale price index inflation fell from the previous week’s level of 6.14 per cent, even as price of vegetables shot up during the reporting week. The WPI fell by 0.2 per cent to 172.4 points from a week-ago figure of 172.8 since the indices of all the major commodities groups — primary articles, fuels and manufactured products — moved southwards and the index was 162.6 in the previous year. The index of mass consumption primary articles’ group was marginally down by 0.1 per cent to 179.9 due to price dip in food articles, even as non-food articles’ prices shot up and the index was 168.7 a year-ago.
