Govt
hikes ex-granary prices for rice export
New Delhi: In what could make Indian rice less
competitive in the world market, the government on Monday
announced a hike in ex-granary prices for rice exports
by a whopping Rs 585-865 per tonne for the next quarter
while creating five price slabs on an yearly basis. A
decision to this effect was taken by the food ministry,
based on the recommendations of a high-level committee
looking into foodgrain exports and the new rates will
be applicable for the July-September quarter. For the
2002 crop, the price of par-boiled rice has been hiked
by Rs 585 a tonne to Rs 7,500 per tonne and that of raw
rice is up by Rs 690 per tonne to Rs 7,300 per tonne making
the categories costlier by $12-15 a tonne in the international
market.
