China beats US as top recipient of FDI in '02
London: China overtook the US as the biggest recipient of foreign direct investment in '02 as an economic slump hit merger and acquisition activity in the world's largest economies, according to OECD figures.

The Paris-based Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said overseas invest- ment in China rose to an estimated $53 bn last year, up nearly 20%.

New bar-code system hits US retailers
New York: The little black-and-white striped bar codes on nearly every packaged item will soon cost US retailers big time as they spend millions of dollars to comply with a new global industry-wide scanning rule.

The ubiquitous bar codes, which help stores speed up the check-out process and keep track of inventory, made their appearance at grocery store check-out counters 30 years ago.

SARS slows down Beijing's economy by 1.8%
Beijing: The outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome epidemic has slowed down the economy of the national capital of China by 1.8 per cent in the first five months, the state media reported on Sunday.

Beijing's development planning commission said the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the city rose by 10.4 per cent during the same period last year to $14.5 billion
